Had a short driving day as we got a late start in the morning and were still unsure about the storms east of our position so stopped in Lincoln, Nebraska for the afternoon and evening. After working on the pictures for the blog, we drove to downtown to the famous Haymarket Section of old warehouses housing restaurants, a micro-brewery and shops. The Licorice International one was closed (Nuts! as I love that candy) but I managed to find some items to purchase in the Nebraska Store.
The Iron Horse Park held a full size train locomotive and an impressive mural with a hand-carved rendering of a train complete with a life-sized carved tree.
We ate nearby at Buzzard Billy's outside on the porch, watching the people pass by,
While I enjoyed the local Burning Skye Scottish Ale:
A visit to the 'loo' was rewarding beginning in the hall outside with a vintage poster of my favorite Swedish group, Abba and then,
the spot-on pin-ups inside - Robert:
James:
Sean and Richard.
We had seen quite a few Sinclair gas stations in Utah and Nebraska which brought back memories of the time when the New York area sported the Dino sign.
Billy's had lot of vintage signs and photos throughout the inside including this advert for this same gasoline.
It was easy to see that the town is crazy nuts about their football team with red N's in sight everywhere. The Haymarket is very close to the University so there were many students walking around with their Nebraska shirts. We passed by the stadium which it is said holds about the same number of fans as Death Valley of the Clemson team and has had a sell-out for every game since 1962!
Memorial Stadium:
The RR Station:
The Capitol Building of the state:
With the Lincoln Statue in front sculpted by the same artist as did the likeness at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
A pretty view taken at dusk from the capitol building.
Lincoln was one of a number of state capital cities we've visited or passed through on this trip:
Atlanta, Georgia; Jackson, Mississippi; Sacramento, California; Carson City, Nevada; Salt Lake City, Utah; Des Moines, Iowa and then, Lincoln.
