The Sultana carried too many Confederate soldiers
even though it had sprung a leak. They were paid
$5 for each soldier they carried. The boat was designed for
somewhat over 300 passengers but 2700 were jammed
inside and when it sank, 1700 lost their lives.
Jefferson Davis hearing that he has been selected to the
responsibility to be the President of the Confederacy. Not
a welcome burden to him.
